The regional natural park of Pian di Spagna
The regional natural park of Pian di Spagna and Lake Mezzola was recognized by Ramsar Convention in order to safeguard wetlands and it was established in 1985.
It is a 1500 hectares wide territory between the provinces of Como and Sondrio among the municipalities of Sorico, Gera Lario, Dubino, Verceia and Novate Mezzola.
Adda river, by floods, has created the plain and the marsh, and now they are the perfect habitat for migratory and sedentary birds. The "Consorzio Riserva Naturale Pian di Spagna", located in Sorico, is the local authority for the management and the safeguard of this area.
It is possible to make some excursion and birdwatching with the presence of expert and qualified guides, without disturbing animals and their environment. In the nature reserve, in Gera Lario, there is also the ornithological observatory Lodoletta, where migratory birds have been studied for years.
Among the typical plants of the reserve there are water lilies, marsh reeds, reed-maces and various kinds of iris.
Among the animals: crawfishes, trouts, swans, ashen herons, roes and deers. Unforfunately,
there are no more otters left.
